Exploring Other Artistic Mediums

I love quilting, and it is my technique of choice for my fiber art, hands down! However, I find it necessary to help myself grow as well as to give my creative muse a break to take time to explore other techniques, as well as other mediums.
This week, I am spending some time knitting. I'm a "basic knitter", that is to say, I know how to knit and purl and that is pretty much it. Despite my lack of skill, I enjoy knitting a simple scarf or a pair of slippers.
It is important to expose oneself to other mediums, techniques and products in order to keep growing as an artist as well as to avoid becoming stagnant in our own chosen style. It can cure boredom in the studio, and open up our art to adding new and exciting components!

 Ideas to try:

  • Painting - you can practice with water colors or acrylics and apply the things you learn to painting on fabrics later!

  • Knitting - you can knit small shapes and pieces and incorporate those into your fiber art pieces

  • Weaving - What better thing to add to your pieces than fabric you created yourself!

  • Sculpture - Get some Sculpy and trying making some three dimensional pieces to use as embellishment on your pieces (add on top of that using some acrylics to paint and decorate your baubles!)

  • Beading - Embellish, embellish, embellish!
Have you tried other mediums and incorporated them into your fiber art? Let us know about it!

  1. Hi Stephanie,
I am about where you are on knitting. But, I did incorporate some in piece I created earlier this year. I needed a background and decided to knit it. It was a good experiment. And, it has me thinking about other ways to use knitting in my art.
